More maddening principles that I have taken up. There’s also the fact The Cat Returns is very similar to the story of the Nutcracker, a fairy tale, which is the type of stories Shizuku was into, possibly drawing inspiration from that as well. For a good while now, in every review, I have always tried to explain exactly why I liked or disliked an anime. minus all the death and demonic stuff, but writers take from their lives and twist it into their novels. This happens quite a lot in the world of novel writing, for example, Stephen King’s Pet Sematary was loosely based on true events. Now, it is very possible that Shizuku took the first draft in her book and events / feelings from her early life and incorporated that into what will later become The Cat Returns. Let’s look at the evidence both films feature Muta and Baron, being somewhat magical, Muta’s introduction is very similar in both films, both characters are forced into things they don’t want (Shizuku to go to high school, Haru to marry a cat), both of the films have a different genre (Whisper being more drama and Cat being a fantasy) and by the end of both films, the characters realise who they are and what they want. That’s all well and good but what does this all mean? Well, my theory is that in-universe, Shizuku is the writer for The Cat Returns. Anyway, she gets saved by the Baron, returns home and is a more satisfied person in her life. So Haru gets captured and taken to the cat kingdom (so many original names) and starts to turn into a cat, in order to avoid any bestial complications that come with a human marrying a cat. Here, she meets the Baron, depicted in a very similar way to Shizuku’s fantasy in Whisper. She meets Muta in a public place and leads her to the bureau. She learns she needs to seek help from a place called the cat bureau. She later learns that the cat king intends for her to marry the cat prince, again, she’s not keen. She is later assaulted by an unending gratitude from the cat royal family (I guess), who give her gifts like mice and catnip, despite she doesn’t want those things. She learns that the cat is a prince, can talk and walk on his hind legs. One day, she saves a cat from getting hit by a truck. She is also a young girl who is trying to sort her life out. After learning she needs to take time in polishing her story until it’s perfect, she decides to give in to the pressure to go to high school and develop her skills. She decides to let the old man read the first draft of her book. This inspired Shizuku to write a story about the statue as a real being in a fantasy world who seems to go on an adventure with a young girl. In his grandfather’s shop, he is selling a cat statue named “The Baron”. especially after she meets a young boy named Seigi who she meets after following a stray cat named “Muta” to his grandfather’s shop. Her talent for writing lyrics and her love of books inspires her to pursue a career as a writer. She is in a transitional stage in her life where she is due to go to high school but has no idea what she actually wants to do with her life. Our protagonist in Whisper is a young girl named Shizuku. So could they exist in the same universe? However, The Cat Returns is a more fantasy-based story than Whisper which had more grounds in reality as a kind of coming of age story. And Muta, an obese cat who somewhat help our heroes in both films. Both films include the characters known as Baron a bipedal cat statue dressed in a suit and top hat and voiced by Carey Elwes. The Cat Returns was a Studio Ghibli film that is considered a spin off to a film that came before called Whisper of the Heart.
